Excellent product, easy to set up and get started with. Delivered very quickly and securely by whatgeek.
Thanks guys!
I am a newbie to handheld console emulation though I have used Windows and Linux based emulators in the past.
First - my interaction with uk.whatgeek:
My Mangmi Air X was sold by uk.whatgeek at a competitive price compared to similar items from AliExpress, Amazon and other online tech sellers. The item turned up when WhatGeek said it would, was new (not refurbished) and was in excellent condition. I recommend uk.whatgeek to other buyers and I will consider them if I ever decide to buy another handheld emulator.
Second - the Mangmi Air X itself:
This is a good budget Android-based handheld, perfect for those who are curious about console emulation but unwilling to spend much more than ~£100 to sate that curiosity.
So far I am very pleased with my purchase.
In terms of setup I kept the OS, but didn't use the bundled emulation software. Instead I used the latest stable build of RetroArch, the ES-DE frontend, a standalone Dolphin emulator and Magic DOSBox. Emulation is stable and accurate and, surprisingly, provides a much better experience than playing games on the original consoles. As with most emulators, set up is a fiddle, especially on the 8-bit platforms. This is not a 'Ready To Play Out Of The Box' experience. So far I have had no problems with the handheld that couldn't be resolved by watching a few YouTube videos by Retro Game Corps or Tech Dweeb. I have also installed several commonly used Android apps like Spotify, Gmail, the BBC News, Weather, Sounds and iPlayer apps and YouTube. All of these ran without any issues.
Pros:
- The device looks and feels like a mini Nintendo Switch Lite. The build isn't as robust or the same quality, but is more than adequate given the device's price. Using the provided screen protector and a case (not included), the Mangmi Air X can be carried around in a bag and used on the move.
- The screen is sharp, clear and of an adequate size for 8-bit to 32-bit console emulation.
- The controls are responsive and comfortable to use.
- This handheld can emulate Dreamcast, PS1, Megadrive, PC Engine, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, SNES and NES games without difficulty.
- It can emulate most N64 and GameCube games at 1x resolution. Oddly, the handheld works better with the GameCube games than N64 - something to do with the vagaries of N64 emulation rather than a lack of pure processing grunt apparently.
- DOS/Win95/Win98 games emulated using Magic DOSBox run well on the device.
- The Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity are reliable and work well with my headphones, external games controllers and my home network.
Cons:
- Emulator setup is not easy or obvious. Note this is an issue common to most (if not all) emulators, not specifically the Mangmi Air X.
- The device cannot emulate anything more demanding than GameCube or Dreamcast games.
- The internal speakers are bit weedy really; they are fairly quiet and lack bass. As I prefer to play wearing headphones this isn't an issue for me.
- The battery life is adequate (~6 hours) and needs to be charged using a 5W USB-C charger. Fast charging does not work.
- The device's screen is adequate for console emulation but is too small and narrow to be used as a tablet.
- The cooling fan inside the handheld is noticeable, but not distracting. On the plus side, the handheld never runs hot.
- There isn't an HDMI out port. It's possible to cast the screen to an external monitor via Google Chrome (or equivalent) but there is a noticeable lag on anything more demanding than PS1 emulation.
Overall:
Right now in February 2026, the Mangmi Air X is an excellent buy for budget conscious emulation newbies like myself. I recommend it without reservation for those wanting to play 8-bit to 32-bit games. At the same time, the handheld emulator market is moving very, very fast with new and more powerful models being released almost daily. I doubt that the Mangmi Air X will be as attractive at this price point in a few months' time.
Feels well built and premium for the price bracket. Buttons are responsive and the triggers feel especially nice.
If you’re mainly into PSP, this is an easy recommendation. Everything just works and looks far better than original hardware.
Only small downside for me is the fan noise when it’s working hard. Not terrible, but noticeable in quiet rooms.
