I purchased this device primarily for playing Nintendo DS titles. My specific intention was to revisit the Fire Emblem series on larger, brighter screens. Surprisingly, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for this device. Launching games using the built-in emulator was a seamless experience. The device’s aligned top and bottom screen ratio allows me to enjoy classic titles as they were created on more vibrant IPS displays. The overall build quality is commendable, and I believe the hinge will withstand regular use, provided it’s not excessively bent. While the processor may not be sufficient for playing 3DS games, it’s more than adequate for Nintendo DS titles. Initially, I had concerns about the sound quality due to Anbernic’s history of volume imbalance in some of its previous handhelds. However, both low and high volume settings played without any cracking or buzzing.
Came early & better the my real ds
The RG DS plays DS games at 2xScale well and I also use it for PS1 titles to round it out. It's a great budget handheld for DS games and below. The only negatives are the battery life is "meh" at around 3ish hours and the stylus sucks. The stylus wasn't accurate for me so I replaced it with a higher quality stylus which fixed the accuracy issues. The RG DS is also on the weaker side so it may take some tinkering to get Dreamcast, N64, and PSP to run. DS and PS1 run great right out of the box. Very happy I can put my original DS hardware to rest and not put anymore wear and tear on such an old device. The RG DS was exactly what I was looking for...a budget DS handheld.
It looks good, is easy to use, has good graphics, a large selection of games, and all at a good price.
For such a low price you get to play all DS games at 2x resolution and some 3ds games (including the pokemon). I hope this device succeeds so we get an RG 3DS in the future!
